About
How we review tools
Clearstack is an independent buyer's guide to the software people use to start and grow an online business. The pages cover web hosting, website builders, SEO tools, and marketing software. The point of each page is a decision: buy this, skip it, or wait.
We are not a lab with a rack of identical test sites, and we do not pretend otherwise. Scores are editorial judgments from published pricing, documented features, and the kind of upkeep a small business actually takes on. When a price is approximate, the page says so. Confirm the current number before you pay.
The rubric
Four questions decide a recommendation. A tool can be excellent and still be the wrong purchase this month.
01
The job it replaces
A tool should remove a real chore: hosting, checkout, layout, research, or email. If it only adds a login, it waits.
02
The price after the promo
Intro discounts, app fees, and renewal rates decide the cost. We compare the second year, not the landing-page price.
03
The upkeep you accept
WordPress is flexible because you maintain it. Shopify costs more because you do not. That trade is the decision.
04
How hard it is to leave
We favor tools that export customers, content, and products. A cheap tool that traps the business is not cheap.
How the site makes money
Some links are affiliate links. If you buy through them, we may earn a commission. You do not pay extra. A vendor cannot buy the top recommendation, and a missing affiliate program does not remove a tool that belongs in the comparison.
The affiliate disclosure explains this in plain language. Placeholder links in the source code send readers to the official site until a real tracking URL is added in src/data/programs.ts.
What we will not do
- Invent speed tests, uptime percentages, or a fictional reviewer.
- Hide a renewal price behind an introductory offer.
- Recommend five paid tools before the business has an offer.
Corrections
Pricing and plan names change. If a page is wrong, email hello@clearstackguide.com with the URL and the correction. Pages show an updated date when the advice changes.
